Town of Davidson Welcomes MSC Industrial Direct with Video

As many of you may have heard, MSC Industrial Direct, a company based on Long Island, NY, is building a co-headquarters in Davidson, just down the road from the Homewood Suites at exit 30.  They will be breaking ground very soon, and their new building will be ready by August, 2013 for about 250 people. 

To welcome them to Davidson, and help the employees learn more about our wonderful community, the Town of Davidson created this video.  I thought I’d share it with you because it gives such a great overview of our neighborhoods, schools and community, and even though it’s tailored towards MSC, any of you out there that are considering a move to Davidson might enjoy seeing the town where I live.  We love it here!

The joys of vacation

I just got back from a week at the beach with my family.  What a special treat!  The nature of my job is such that I pretty much work 24/7.  My goal is to give everyone the concierge service that they have come to expect from me, however, it was really important for me to take this vacation, and get away from it all a little bit.  I'm lucky that I have some really wonderful people on my Mayes Harris Realty team that enabled me to get away.

I decided to do some research on the benefits of taking a vacation, and thought I’d share them with you:

Vacations Relieve Stress in Lasting Ways: It should come as no surprise that vacations that include plenty of free time bring stress relief, but research shows that a good vacation can lead to the experience of fewer stressful days at least five weeks later! That means that vacations are the gift to yourself that keep on giving.
The bottom line is that taking a good amount of time away from the stresses of daily life can give us the break we need so that we can return to our lives refreshed and better equipped to handle whatever comes.

While not everyone is able to take a vacation, taking a day off, or taking a “staycation” is still a great option to recharge your batteries.
I hope you all get a chance to take some time for yourself sometime this year.  I’m really glad I did.

Great Charlotte Video

As you know, I’ve lived in the Lake Norman region my entire life.  The Charlotte Chamber of Commerce just released a video about the Charlotte metro area and I think it highlights everything that makes the city a great place to work, live and play.  Take a look:

Toast, it's not just for breaksfast!

Today my daughter, Anna, and I had lunch at Toast on Main Street in Davidson.  It’s one of our favorite places to go – everything on the menu is good, it’s in a great location, and we always see someone we know.  The atmosphere is lively and hopping.  Today I decided to order the egg salad sandwich and it was served on perfectly-toasted bread with lettuce and tomato.

Anna ordered the chef salad and it was huge!  There was definitely enough for a doggie bag.  The dressing (on the side) was really flavorful.

The service was quick and attentive, and we’ll be back.  This is my go-to place when I’m meeting a friend for lunch or a business associate for a quick bite to eat and need to be close to my home office.  On weekends, this place is extremely popular for breakfast!  Go check it out and then you can stroll around the shops in Historic Davidson.

What upgrades should you make before listing your home?

Before you list your home, it helps to know which cosmetic updates will help you sell more quickly and which won’t.   First of all, your home will sell more quickly if its price is comparable to other homes nearby.

For a quick sale, don’t add extras like a home office or a lavish master suite – potential buyers could see theses as “over-the-top,” and might even prefer to add their own extras based on their personal taste.

Don’t go overboard with upgrades – you may end up losing money. A great looking lawn and landscaping are nice, but don’t add an extra patio because you might not get your money back.  For a bathroom upgrade, a new tub or shower will appeal to buyers, but depending on the market, a newly-installed whirlpool tub could be seen as excessive.  Again, the buyers might want to make their own cosmetic changes.

A lot of buyers judge a house by its exterior, so upgrades in siding and wood can make a big difference.  Even a new deck can improve the overall appeal of the home’s exterior.  Kitchen remodeling is also an area where you’ll be able to recoup some of your expenses.

During this market, renovations and upgrades are being discounted, so many of these cosmetic changes are worth the investment.
