Town of Cornelius
Welcome to the Town of Cornelius
Cornelius is a North Mecklenburg town which is located south of Davidson and north of Huntersville. Founded in the late 1800's, the town did not officially incorporate until 1905. The town was originally known as "Liverpool", was named after Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, who supplied the needed capial to start the first cotton mill in Cornelius during the late 1880's.
The town got a major boost as Duke Energy dammed the Catawba River in 1963 to form what is now known as Lake Norman. Lake Norman is North Carolina's largest man made lake with over 500 miles of shoreline. The lake has become a key source of energy and water to the entire Charlotte Metro area and beyond.Today, Cornelius is a small quaint town cener with it's western town limits defined by the shoreline of Lake Norman. Cornelius has been dedicated to providing pedesterian friendly communities as it to grow in population. Residents find it a quick commute to the adjoining towns of Davidson or Huntersville or a easy 20 minute drive to the uptown area of Charlotte. Cornelius offers homes for buyers of all price ranges and sizes, from the quaint neo-traditional bungalows to high end lake shore living on Lake Norman.
